1932 - The Kingdom of Hejaz and Nejd is renamed the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
1568 - Spanish naval forces rout an English fleet, under the command of John Hawkins, at the Battle of San Juan de Ulúa near Veracruz.
2024 - Israel launched a campaign of airstrikes against Hezbollah targets in Lebanon : approximately 1.300 targets were hit and at least 490 people were killed in a single day. This was the heaviest toll since the fighting began in October 2023.
1846 - German astronomer Johann Gottfried Galle observed Neptune for the first time from the Berlin Observatory. The planet was found at the point calculated purely mathematically by Urbain Le Verrier , without anyone having ever seen it before.
