Hong Kong public holidays for 2019 announced

Hong Kong, May 11th 2018

According to the Hong Kong government’s announcement on Friday, workers will receive 17 public holidays in 2019 – the same as in 2018. During 2019 they will enjoy six long weekends.

As usual planning ahead and using your annual holiday allowance to create long weekends is an efficient way to extend the public holidays.

The year starts with New Year's Day, which falls on a Tuesday in 2019. Using a day of annual leave on Monday 31 December 2018, would create a four-day weekend, but check to your 2018 allowance first.

Hong Kong will celebrate the arrival of the Chinese Year of the Pig on Tuesday 5 February, and enjoy public holidays on the Wednesday and Thursday. Taking the Monday or Friday as holiday, or both, will create a good holiday break. Using two days for the Monday and Friday would create a nine-day holiday.

Ching Ming falls on Friday 5 April, creating a long weekend with no use of holiday allowance. Note that Easter falls after Ching Ming in 2019.

The Birthday of the Buddha falls on Sunday 12 May, but as the holiday falls on a Sunday, the day following (Monday 14 May 2019) is designated as a public holiday under general holiday rules. It is not all good news though, Hong Kong workers do miss out on the Day following the Mid-Autumn Festival, which falls on Saturday 14 September.

National Day is on Tuesday 1 October, and is followed closely by Chung Yeung Festival on Monday 7 October. This offers some interesting ways to create a long weekend or maximise a week's holiday.

Finally, with Christmas on Wednesday 25 December and Boxing Day on Thursday 26 December, Friday 27 December will be a very popular day to take off to create a five-day Christmas break.
