Known as Retrocession Day and the Anniversary of the Battle of Guningtou, October 25th is a public holiday in Taiwan that marks two events that took place on that date in the 1940s.
The day became a public holiday in 2025, following the announcement of a series of new public holidays.
Retrocession Day
Retrocession Day is the annual observance to commemorate the end of Japanese rule of Taiwan and Penghu and the claimed return of Taiwan to the Republic of China on October 25th 1945.
Anniversary of the Battle of Guningtou
The Battle of Guningtou, also known as the Battle of Kuningtou or the Battle of Kinmen, was fought in October 1949 on the island of Kinmen, located in the Taiwan Strait, during the final stages of the Chinese Civil War. The battle resulted in a decisive victory for the Republic of China forces and marked a significant turning point in the civil war.
