  Summary

A Hindu festival that falls on the specific conjunction of the new moon and a Monday.

The date on which Sombar (Monday) coincides with the Amavasya (day of the new moon) is called ‘Somvati Amavasya’ or ‘Sombare Aunsi’. In the scriptures, Somavati Amavasya is considered a special day for doing good deeds.

According to Hindu scriptures, it has been said that bathing and meditating in silence on this day will bring virtue. Monday is the day of the moon. The moon is a symbol of the mind and the sun is also a symbol of the brain. Monday is also considered to be the day of Shiva and today is dedicated to Lord Shiva.

This festival is considered auspicious for bathing or donating. On this day, devotees from far and wide visit different pilgrimage sites only for bathing. According to The Hindu religion, it has been said that a big coincidence or luck is required to get the date of the day of "Monday Aunsi". It is said that even the characters of Mahabharata could not observe a Monday Aunsi in their lifetime.

If the Sombar (Monday) falls on Aunsi, Aitabar Saptami (Sunday Saptami), Mangalbar Chauthi (Tuesday Chauthi), Budhabar Ashtami (Wednesday Ashtami) dates, those dates are considered to be fruitful and full of merits as equal to the days of eclipse. The baths, donations, and shraddhas performed on these dates are said to be very auspicious as they give inexhaustible fruits, so Sombare Aunsi is considered to be extremely auspicious.

It is mentioned in the scriptures that if one wakes up on Sombare Ausi (Monday) morning and takes a bath without speaking to anyone, one will get the same amount of merit as donating a thousand cows. Therefore, the sum of Amavasya (New Moon) and Sombare Ausi is considered to be more important than the sum of other important dates and tithis.
