Koshi Province declared a public holiday to mark the renaming of the province from Province 1.

The Koshi Province government has announced a public holiday in the province on Thursday March 2nd 2023 to celebrate the naming of the province.

The Internal Affairs and Law Ministry on the recommendation of the Cabinet meeting decided to grant a public holiday.

A meeting of the Province Assembly held on Wednesday decided to name Province 1 as Koshi Province.

The name proposed by the CPN-UML was endorsed by a majority.

Nepali Congress, CPN (Maoist Centre), and Rastriya Prajatantra Party lawmakers voted in the favour of the proposal to name Province 1 as Koshi Province.

The proposal to rename the province as Koshi Province was endorsed by a two-thirds majority in the provincial assembly on Wednesday March 2nd.

There were 82 votes in favor and four votes against the proposal to name the province as Koshi Province.

Earlier, the CPN (Unified Socialist) and the Janata Samajbadi Party had demanded that the province be named Kirat-Limbuwan-Sagarmatha.

Similarly, the Unified Samajwadi Party's proposal to name the province as Kirat Limbuwan Sagarmatha was supported by Janata Samajwadi Party (JSP). Out of the seven provinces in the country, only one province is yet to get a proper name. It took almost five years for the state assembly to endorse the new name of the province.
