  Summary

Allow voters to travel to be able to participate in the presidential election.

April 18th - 20th 2022

The second ballot for the election of the President of the Republic will be held on April 19th, 2022. As a result, Monday April 18th and Tuesday April 19th will be a holiday fro "civil servants and agents of the ministries or services dependent on them, as well as institutes and bodies integrated into the indirect administration of the State".

Wednesday April 20th will also be a half-day off, with work resuming at 2.00pm.

As the second ballot follows the national holidays for easter, a large number of people will have to travel to their respective voter registration centres to take part in the said vote and then return to their usual place of work; In such circumstances it is important to combat abstention and to promote the participation of all citizens in the forthcoming elections.

March 18th 2022

Asia's newest country, with a population of 1.3 million goes to the polls on March 19th 2022 for its fifth presidential election.

There are 16 candidates, including a former priest, for 859,613 voters to choose from at 1,500 polling stations nationwide and five overseas.

As part of efforts to ensure that all voters can participate, the government declared March 18th 2022 a national holiday to allow voters registered in their hometowns to travel to vote.

In nearly 20 years since independence, East Timor's presidential and parliamentary elections have been dominated by many of the same faces. Resistance heroes like Ramos-Horta, Guterres, and Xanana Gusmao have run for and held various positions of power and continue to feature prominently in the running of the country.

In East Timor's political system, the president also shares some executive powers and appoints a government and has the power to veto ministers or dissolve parliament.

The President of East Timor is elected using the two-round system.
