  Summary

Election Day is a public holiday to maximise the opportunity for citizens to vote in the General Elections.

The Cayman Islands is a British overseas territory. A 19-seat (not including two non-voting members appointed by the Governor which brings the total to 21 members) Legislative Assembly is elected by the people every four years to handle domestic affairs.

In 2017, the Cayman Islands held the first elections in more than 50 years under the one man, one vote system

Of the elected Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs), seven are chosen to serve as government Ministers in a Cabinet headed by the Governor. The Premier is appointed by the Governor.

All registered voters, even those still required to work on public holidays, must be given time off to go to the polls. No employer is allowed to make any pay deductions or impose penalties on workers who need time to vote.

Under the law, any employer who refuses or interferes with the granting of a reasonable time to vote commits an offence and is liable to a fine of up to $500 or imprisonment.

Any employees denied the opportunity to vote should report the infraction to the authorities.
