Taiwan, Jul 2nd 2018
According to the calendar released on Monday by the Directorate-General of Personnel Administration, Taiwanese workers will receive 115 public holidays and weekends in 2019. During 2019 they will enjoy six long weekends.
As usual planning ahead and using your annual holiday allowance to create long weekends is an efficient way to extend the public holidays. In 2019, no one-day holiday falls on a Wednesday, so the long weekends are created using the normal holiday rules, with the usual proviso that some Saturdays will have to be sacrificed to create these long weekends.
The year starts with New Year's Day, which falls on a Tuesday in 2019. The day before has already been scheduled as a public holiday, so there is no need to use any personal holiday to create a longer weekend.
Taiwan will celebrate the arrival of the Chinese Year of the Pig with a week of holidays from Monday 4 February 2018 to Friday 8 February, creating a nine-day break. Friday 8 February will be compensated by a previous Saturday. Normally this would be the Saturday before the holiday, but Saturday 26 January coincides with the national General Scholastic Ability Test to determine student university admissions, so the administration will use Saturday 19 January as the official compensation day.
Peace Memorial Day on 28 February falls on a Thursday, so the following Friday will be a public holiday compensated by Saturday 23 February.
Children's Day falls on Thursday 4 April and Ching Ming falls on Friday 5 April, creating a four-day long weekend with no use of holiday allowance.
Both Dragon Boat Festival and the Mid Autumn Festival fall on Fridays in 2019, creating long weekends without the need to dip into any holiday allowance.
Rounding off the holidays in 2019 is National Day, which will be on Thursday 10 October. Friday 11 October will therefore be a public holiday compensated by Saturday 5 October.
