Kuala Lumpur, May 10th 2018
On Wednesday, Malaysia's opposition Pakatan Harapan alliance headed by veteran former prime minister Mahathir Mohamad, 92, won a historic election victory, ending the 60 year rule of the Barisan Nasional coalition. The results makes Mahathir Mohamad the world's oldest elected leader.
In the run-up to the 14th General Election, Mohamad had said that Thursday and Friday would be public holidays if he won, forcing the previous prime minister, Mr Najib, to also promise public holidays if his coalition won.
"The declaration of the public holiday is made based on Section 8 of the Public Holidays Act 1951 for Peninsular Malaysia and the Federal Territory of Labuan," he said in a statement.
On Thursday, Chief secretary to the government Ali Hamsa announced that Thursday and Friday would be declared additional public holidays for the whole of Malaysia in conjunction with the 14th general election.
Bank Negara Malaysia said that all financial institutions, as well as, the onshore money, bond and foreign exchange markets will be closed from today and reopen for business on Monday 14 May 2018.
Sunday will be the additional public holiday for states observing Friday and Saturday as the weekend holidays.
For Sabah and Sarawak, the state governments must declare additional public holidays on those dates according to their respective Public Holidays Ordinance.
There will be no public holidays in Sarawak on 11 or 12 May and will remain normal working days.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the Sarawak Chief Minister’s Office announced that the state government had decided to only declare additional public holidays on May 17 and May 18.
The declaration, said the statement, is made in pursuant of Section 5 of the Public Holiday Ordinance, 1958, though no reason for the chosen dates of 17 and 18 May has been given.
