About Election Day in Tanzania

Wednesday, October 28th 2020 will be declared a day of rest throughout Tanzania for the general election exercise of the President, members of parliament and councillors.

Note that this day will be followed by two days of holidays for Maulid.

President Magufuli has called on the National Electoral Commission (NEC) to ensure that it administers the elections fairly, in accordance with the country’s constitution, while urging political parties to participate peacefully and to avoid violence as violence does not build but tear down.

“I am confident things will go well, the people should be involved in political campaigns to listen to the policy, and the participants should also be in large numbers in the voting exercise.

“Election day (Wednesday October 28th 2020) will be a day off, we will officially announce it,” he said.

The President's Chama Cha Mapinduzi party has been in power since the formation of the country, though until 1992 it was the only allowed political party.

Magufuli won the October 2015 presidential election and secured a two-thirds majority in parliament. The other party or main opposition party in Tanzania is called Chama cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo (Chadema) (Swahili for "Party for Democracy and Progress"). In Zanzibar, the Civil United Front is considered a main opposition political party.
