  Summary

A public holiday in Jammu and Kashmir on the Friday after Eid-i-Milad-ul-Nabi

In Jammu and Kashmir, the Friday following Eid-i-Milad-ul-Nabi is a holiday to be observed throughout the state.

Eid e-Milad-un Nabi is the birthday of the Prophet Muhammad. It is celebrated on the 12th day of the month of Rabiulawal, the third month of the Muslim calendar.

Also commonly known as 'Milad un Nabi', this day is observed as a public holiday in many countries with a large Muslim population as it commemorates the anniversary of the birth of the founder of Islam and the proclaimer of the Qurʾan.

Salaat-ul-Jumu'ah (the Friday prayer), is a religious act which takes the place of the daily afternoon prayer each Friday. It is one of the most exalted Islamic rituals and one of its confirmed non-obligatory acts.

In Jammu and Kashmir, the first Friday prayers after Eid e-Milad-un Nabi are particularly important.

Thousands of devotees will visit the Hazratbal Shrine, popularly called Dargah Sharif ("the Holy Shrine"). This is a Muslim shrine located in Hazratbal locality of Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir, India. It contains a relic, Moi-e-Muqqadas, which is widely believed to be the hair of the Islamic prophet Muhammad.
