In 2024, the incumbent government announced a new public holiday to be obvserved on May 28th. The day marks the historic day, ‘Youm-e-Takbeer’, when Pakistan became an atomic power.
This day commemorates the successful nuclear tests conducted on May 28, 1998, in Chaghi, Balochistan, which made Pakistan the first Muslim country and the seventh in the world to possess nuclear weapons.
Youm-e-Takbeer is seen as a moment of national pride, celebrated to honor the country’s scientific and defense advancements. Each year, the day is marked by ceremonies, political speeches, and media tributes recognizing the efforts of scientists and leadership behind the achievement
Speaking in 2024, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said that the ‘Youm-e-Takbeer’ is a reminder of the country’s unshakeable commitment to its defense and sovereignty.
“On this day, we unite under the green and white flag to celebrate our nation’s unwavering resolve,” the prime minister added.
He highlighted the significance of May 28th 1998, when Pakistan successfully conducted nuclear tests, making its defence invincible. “We will continue to work tirelessly to ensure economic security and prosperity for our nation,” he vowed.
As a result of these tests, Pakistan became the first nuclear power in the Muslim world and seventh in the world.
