On Sunday October 26th, in the capital city of Victoria, Patrick Herminie was sworn in as the head of state of the Republic of Seychelles. The day was accompanied by popular celebrations, and Monday October 27th was declared a national holiday by the outgoing government in recognition of the transfer of power.
Seasoned public servant and former medical doctor, the 62-year-old Herminie won the presidency in the second round of voting with 52.7% of the votes, as announced by the electoral commission of Seychelles on October 12. Representing the United Seychelles Party, Herminie previously served as speaker of the National Assembly from 2007 to 2016.
During the inauguration, the new president vowed to unite the nation, improve the quality of life for citizens through pragmatic policies, and pursue a path of sustainable development for the island nation.

This one-off holiday coincides with the country’s Presidential run-off elections.

This one-off holiday coincides with the country’s Presidential and National Assembly elections.
The order, made by the President on August 27th. This is in accordance with the Public Holidays Act.
Declaring election day a public holiday is not new in Seychelles, with similar measures taken previously, for elections held in 2007, 2011, 2015 and 2020.
Eight candidates are contesting the Presidential vote, which takes place from September 25th to 27th, according to the Electoral Commission.
Incumbent Wavel Ramkalawan, from the Seychelles Democratic Alliance (LDS), is seeking a second term.
October 4th 2020
President Danny Faure has declared that October 24th 2020 will be observed as a public holiday.
This is in accordance with section 5 of the Public Holidays Act.
October 24th 2020 is the main polling day for the Seychelles’ Presidential and National Assembly elections to be held from October 22nd -24th 2020.
About Seychelles Election Holidays
The Seychelles president, who is head of state and head of government, is elected by popular vote for a five-year term of office. The cabinet is presided over and appointed by the president, subject to the approval of a majority of the legislature.
The Seychellois parliament, the National Assembly consists of 34 members, 25 of whom are elected directly by popular vote, while the remaining nine seats are appointed proportionally according to the percentage of votes received by each party. All members serve five-year terms.
