The 2024 Puerto Rico gubernatorial election will be held on November 5th 2024, to elect the governor of Puerto Rico, concurrently with the election of the Resident Commissioner, the Senate, the House of Representatives, and the mayors of the 78 municipalities.

The governor of Puerto Rico is the head of government of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, and commander-in-chief of the Puerto Rico National Guard.

The government of Puerto Rico is composed of three branches. The executive is headed by the governor. The legislative branch consists of the bicameral Legislative Assembly, made up of a Senate as its upper chamber and a House of Representatives as its lower chamber; the Senate is headed by a president, while the House is headed by the speaker of the House.

The governor and legislators are elected by popular vote every four years. The judicial branch is headed by the chief justice of the Supreme Court of Puerto Rico. Members of the judiciary are appointed by the governor with the advice and consent of the Senate.

Election Day in Puerto Rico is a public holiday, with paper ballots and government ID required. Voters have their fingers dyed to make sure they don’t show up at another polling location. If you don’t vote in a given year, you have to re-activate registration.
