After a 0-0 draw with Suriname on Thursday September 4th 2025, Paraguay has qualified for the finals of the 2026 World Cup, for the first time in 16 years.
Following the qualification, President Santiago Peña formally requested the application of Law No. 7.544/2025, which regulates the work and study regime in the country and opens the possibility of declaring holidays on special occasions.
Speaking ahead of the game, Roberto Moreno, legal advisor to the Presidência da República, said that Friday, September 5th, 2025, could be declared a national holiday in Paraguay at the last minute.
“There is a possibility that we will inaugurate the special holidays law this Friday,” said Moreno, quoted by the newspaper. Last Minute. “It will depend on the results of the selection, but we are very excited and will be waiting in anticipation.”
Under the new law, the president of Paraguay has the power to declare up to three additional holidays per year to celebrate special occasions or benefit tourism.
In a World Cup year, for example, the government may declare a national holiday on days when the Paraguayan national team plays. On the other hand, in situations such as long weekends, the president may add an extra day to promote tourism.
According to Roberto Moreno, “if Paraguay confirms its qualification, the decree will be issued as soon as the match ends, around 22:30 pm on Thursday.”
