Due to the powerful weather system sweeping across several regions of the country, Prime Minister Osama Hammad issued an official decision extending the public holiday to include Wednesday and Thursday, January 21 and 22, 2026. The move was taken as a preventive measure to protect citizens, limit unnecessary movement, and reduce the likelihood of accidents or injuries linked to deteriorating weather conditions.

The government emphasized that the decision reflects its commitment to prioritizing public safety while allowing emergency agencies to operate at maximum capacity during the critical period. Authorities confirmed that emergency committees and security units remain on high alert and will continue monitoring developments until weather conditions stabilize fully.

Prime Minister of the Libyan Parliament-backed government, Osama Hammad, has issued a decision considering Sunday and Monday, 10-11 September 2023, as a holiday in all educational and other public institutions, due to weather conditions.

Resolution No. (72) of 2023 issued excluded security and health authorities and all those who must be present at their work due to necessity and the nature of the work assigned to them.

The Libyan government had warned of severe weather conditions after receiving forecasts of heavy rain and storms.

It warned citizens to take the utmost caution in their movements, especially those using public roads in the affected areas.

The government called on all relevant authorities to declare the maximum level of emergency and to be on alert throughout the coming days to confront this wave of weather fluctuations.

It pointed out that forecasts indicate severe weather conditions; possibility of large amounts of rain, accompanied by storms and thunderstorms, along the Libyan coast, especially in the areas extending from Sirte in the west to the far east of Libya.

The government explained that it had formed a crisis and emergency committee headed by the Prime Minister and the membership of the Ministers of Interior, Health, Local Government, Education, and the Minister of Transportation.

The committee will be in permanent session and continuously follow up on all events.
