When is Kut?

Kut is an Indian state-level holiday observed in Manipur observed on November 1st each year.

Traditions of Kut

Kuts are ancient festivals of the Kuki-Chin-Mizo people. There are different Kuts that celebrate important agricultural events in the year such as harvest times.

This Kut, popularly known as 'Chavang Kut' (Paddy Kut), is the largest and most popular festivals. Its heritage can be traced back 3,000 years. 

One interesting tradition is that the people of Kuki-Chin-Mizo belong to Menashe tribe, one of the 12 lost tribes of Israel. They were lost in 720 BC when the Assyrians conquered the Northern kingdom of Israel and the Menashe tribe were forced into exile. During their exile, the tribe had to cross over the Red Sea and Kut is said to be the thanksgiving festival for their safe passage.

However, others maintain Kut has its origins in nature worship which was practised before the arrival of Buddhism and Hinduism.

Whatever the reason for Kut, there is no doubt that today it is a colourful and effervescent harvest festival, filled with dancing and music and feasting to give thanks for plentiful crops. 

For the Kuki-Chin-Mizo people, Kut is more than a festival or ritual; it is a chance to celebrate their rich tradition and common identity. Kut is a uniting force for the Kuki-Chin-Mizo community. It is also a chance for weary farmers and workers to have a short fun break after the harvest and before the planting of new crops.
