A public holiday has been declared in Kerla to mark the passing of V.S. Achuthanandan.

The government has expressed “profound grief” over the demise of veteran Communist leader and former Kerala chief minister V.S. Achuthanandan, who passed away at 3.20 pm on Monday, 21st July 2025, in Thiruvananthapuram. He was 101.
“As a mark of respect to the departed soul, all State Government offices, educational institutions including professional colleges, State Public Sector Undertakings, Statutory bodies, Autonomous institutions and all institutions under the purview of Negotiable Instruments Act, throughout the State, shall remain closed on Tuesday the 22nd July, 2025,” a government statement read.
It was CPM State Secretary MV Govindan who first announced the death of the veteran leader.
“An all-time great of the CPM party and the leader who paved the way for the party to gain acceptance all across Kerala and even in India. CPM pays tribute to the party heavyweight Comrade VS Achuthanandan. Party flags will be lowered and mourning will be observed,” said MV Govindan.
