A public holiday has been declared to enable citizens to support the national football team as they aim to qualify for the World Cup.

According to Africa Press, Prime Minister Ulisses Correia e Silva announced that Monday October 13th 2025 would be a national day off to allow citizens to rally behind their national team as they aim to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup..
In the official statement, the government praised the national side’s remarkable campaign and urged unity in support of the team.
“On October 13 (today), for the match against Eswatini, the government grants a day off in Santiago starting at 12pm, so that our team receives the greatest possible support,” said the Prime Minister. “We are a step away from a historic feat, and the fans who have supported us throughout deserve to witness this moment with passion and pride.”
The statement further encouraged Cape Verdeans at home and abroad to show solidarity and celebrate their nation’s footballing success.
“Everyone, without exception, including those in the diaspora, is called upon to sing together with one voice, the song of freedom and encouragement for our team in every moment of the match.”
The public holiday applies to government and local authority employees.
However, essential services such as the armed forces, police, health facilities, and Correctional Services will continue operating as normal.
