The interim Bangladesh government has declared July 16th as Martyr Abu Sayeed Day, in remembrance of the student who was killed in police firing in Rangpur during the mass movement that saw the overthrow of the Sheikh Hasina government in 2025.
This day has been classified as a Category B Observance.
Abu Sayed was a Bangladeshi student activist who became a martyr during the 2024 quota reform movement when he was shot by police on July 16th, 2024.
His death sparked widespread protests and he is remembered as a symbol of resistance.
