International: Chinese New Year. The Chinese New Year marks the start of the lunar new year, which occurs sometime between Jan. 21 and Feb. 20. Also known as the Spring Festival, it is considered one of China’s most important celebrations, with each year being named after one of the 12 animals in the Chinese zodiac. Festivities include fireworks, parades, and performances. The holiday closes with a lantern festival.

International: Losar. Tibetan New year, also known as Losar, is the most important festival in the Tibetan calendar

International: Korean New Year. Known as Seollal, Korean New Year is the first day of the lunar Korean calendar. It is the most important of the traditional Korean holidays

Burundi: Unity Day. A holiday intended to help reconcile ethnic differences between the Tutsi and the Hutu, which has dominated the recent history of this African country.

Regional

India (regional): Sonam Lochhar. This is the New Year of the Tamang people and the most important festival in their calendar.

Mongolia: Tsagaan Sar. Mongol New Year is celebrated over the first three days of the lunar year

Pakistan: Kashmir Solidarity Day. Observed since 1990 as a day of protest against Indian control of part of Kashmir

San Marino: Liberation Day. On February 5th 1740, San Marino was liberated from occupation by the forces of Cardinal Giulio Alberoni.

Vietnam: Tet Nguyen Dan. Tet is Vietnamese New Year and is the most important festival and public holiday in Vietnam
