When is the Day of the Region of Murcia?

The Day of the Region of Murcia is observed on June 9th each year. When June 9th falls on a weekend, the holiday is normally moved to the following Monday.

This public holiday is observed throughout the entire autonomous community as a celebration of the culture and heritage of Murcia. Schools, businesses and banks will be closed, as will some bars and restaurants, while shops and supermarkets may have different opening times.

History of the Day of the Region of Murcia

The Day of the Region of Murcia commemorates the promulgation of the Statute of Autonomy on June 9th 1982.

The death of General Franco in 1975 resulted in a transition to democracy. As part of the process, the Spanish constitution of 1978, granted limited autonomy of the nationalities and regions that make up Spain. The province of Murcia was made an autonomous community on the same day as La Rioja.

Murcia is located on the southeast of the Iberian Peninsula.

It gained its name while it was under the control of the Moors, with the city of Murcia founded in 825 by the Emir of Cordoba. In the 13th century, it became part of the Kingdom of Castile.

The region is one of the largest producers of fruits, vegetables, and flowers in Europe.

Murcia is one of the hottest regions in Europe. It holds the record for the highest ever recorded temperature in Spain. On July 4th 1994, the mercury in the thermometers showed a blistering 47.2ºC.
