Vesak Day

Vesak Day is the holiest Buddhist holiday.
It commemorates the birth and enlightenment of Buddha and his entry into Nirvana.
The exact date of Vesak is the first full moon in the fourth month in the Chinese lunar calendar.
The date varies from year to year in the Gregorian calendar, but is typically in May.
May 2007 had two full moon days, the 1st and the 31st. Some countries (including Sri Lanka, Cambodia and Malaysia) celebrated Vesak on the 1st, while others (Thailand, Singapore) celebrated the holiday on the 31st.

These celebrations also include monks chanting. Acts of generosity are observed by Buddhist organizations and temples.
These include the freeing of caged birds and animals, visiting and giving alms to the poor and needy. Silent marches or meditations in the evening end the daylong celebration.
