Japan: Sports Day
National Holiday in Japan
Japan celebrate Sports Day on the second Monday in October..
Until 2003, the holiday was celebrated on October 10th.
This holiday was first observed in 1966 and the date marked the opening day of the Tokyo Olympics in 1964.
To commemorate the first ever Olympic games to take place in Asia, October 10 was made a national holiday.
October is an unusually late time to hold the Summer Olympics, but was chosen to avoid the Japanese rainy season
In celebration of this holiday, many Japanese schools, business and towns hold special Sports Day events including the three-legged race, beanbag toss, and tug-of-war.
