National Holiday in India
On January 26th, Indians celebrate Republic Day. It commemorates the establishment of the Constitution of India.
The holiday and is marked by parades, patriotic songs, exhibitions and fun, celebrating the cultural unity of India.
The day was established by the Indian National Congress on December 31, 1929.
At that time, the tri-colour flag was unfurled and a pledge taken that people would strive for the establishment of a Sovereign Democratic Republic of India, and that every year, on January 26, Independence Day would be celebrated.
Independence from the British rule was eventually achieved on August 15, 1947, and on January 26, 1950, the Constitution of India was established.
Today, August 15 is celebrated as Independence Day, while January 26 is Republic Day.
