Victoria Day
National Holiday in Canada
Victoria Day celebrates the birthday of Queen Victoria (1837-1901).
Victoria Day was established in 1901, after the death of Queen Victoria, a law was passed by the Parliament of Canada establishing a legal holiday on May 24, or May 25 if the 24th falls on a Sunday.
For many Canadians, Victoria Day marks the unofficial beginning of summer, with many people opening their summer cabins.
In Quebec, Victoria Day and the National Patriotes Day (Commemoration of the Lower Canada Rebellion) are celebrated on the same day.
